Words of Welcome - Congress Director, Kate Holmquist

As Congress Director, I am excited to invite you to join our 58th ISOCARP World Planning Congress in Brussels, Belgium! ISOCARP World Planning Congresses are about coming together and advancing Planning together. This year's Congress feels especially relevant: we must take action, but we must take action together.

In the long tradition of international knowledge exchange, I would like to welcome everyone – from the Global South and North, across professions, sectors, and from academia and practice – to join us in an inspirational city that symbolizes collaboration: Brussels. At the political heart of the European Union and the Brussels-Capital Region, and at the confluence of languages, cultures and economic sectors and levels of government, it is a perfect location to consider how planning can overcome divisions, political borders, boundaries between professional disciplines, and cultural and economic divides.

I look forward to coming together with our international planning and placemaking community to explore the 2022 Congress Theme: From Wealthy to Healthy Cities. When we say "cities for people," "healthy planet," "sustainable development", "human rights": what does this really mean? Can cities be healthy if health does not extend to all communities, if sustainability does not include the whole planet and extend to the next generation, or if governments and economies exclude or leave people behind? Let's explore a new planning agenda that moves from wealthy to healthy.

Welcome to the 58th ISOCARP Congress and the Brussels-Capital Region!
